Increased support for Mt Baw Baw Alpine Resort Classic

The Mt Baw Baw Alpine Resort Classic will once again feature as part of the Cycling Victoria Victorian Road Series calendar in 2019, with both elite and amateur cyclists preparing to tackle the iconic ascent up Mt Baw Baw in Gippsland’s West on Sunday, April 7.

The 19th edition of the race doubles as the Victorian Hill Climb Championships with riders of all categories vying to add their name to an illustrious honour roll that includes David McKenzie and Simon Gerrans.

Beginning at the Warragul West Gippsland Arts Centre, riders will travel through Neerim South and Noojee before crossing over Icy Creek. At the 55km mark, riders hit Vespers Hill, which ascends for 4km at a gradient of 8% which is sure to split the field.

“Mt Baw Baw Alpine Resort is thrilled to once again sponsor the Baw Baw Classic,” said Mt Baw Baw Alpine Resort Joint Acting General Manager Sally Brook.

“The Mt Baw Baw climb is ranked amongst the hardest road climbs in Australia and we are very happy to support the incredible athletes who take part in this event.”

Cr Mikaela Power, Mayor of Baw Baw Shire Council:

“Baw Baw Shire is a leading destination for cycling enthusiasts. With picturesque views, peaceful roads and often challenging tracks, Baw Baw is growing in popularity with cyclists of all ages and abilities. With so many young families moving to Baw Baw Shire and people wanting to live healthy and active lives, participation in cycling is at an all-time high.”

“We’re proud to support this event which will boost our local economy, promote cycling and inspire an active and healthy lifestyle. We encourage everyone to save the date and be part of the action supporting riders as they complete the course.”

Last year’s Victorian Road Series winning team InForm TM Insight MAKE will hope to take line honours in the Findex men’s A Grade with 2018 National Road Series champion Raphael Freienstein, two-time Melbourne to Warrnambool winner Nathan Elliott and under 19 national champion Patrick Eddy all racing.

In the Baw Baw Shire women’s A grade, elite women’s national road champion Sarah Gigante will join her Roxsolt teammates including two-time Baw Baw Classic winner Justine Barrow.

Warragul Cycling Club President Karin Jones:

“Other than the Melbourne to Warrnambool, the Mt Baw Baw Alpine Resort Classic is the only other race in the country that offers a medal to all finishers to reward all competitors for their achievement.”

“We are excited to have the Baw Baw Shire back on board this year as a major partner, we see that as an important recognition of the history of the event and the work that the volunteers at Warragul Cycling Club do to ensure its success.”
